It is time for some real talk. And that real talk is about mental health.
Mental health is something that is still a taboo topic to discuss among polite company. It’s even something many people won’t talk about with their friends for fear of the stigma that might come with disclosing mental health struggles.
But one of the biggest areas of mental health problems that no-one wants to talk about publicly is disclosing having schizophrenia.
According to the Mayo Clinic, schizophrenia is:
Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel and behave. It may result in a mix of hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and behavior. Hallucinations involve seeing things or hearing voices that aren’t observed by others
And it’s not how it is often portrayed in popular culture or by those that flippantly describe themselves as “schizo” to define their random behaviors.
It’s a serious mental health condition. It has a profound life-time impact on those who suffer it and those around them, especially loved ones.
The symptoms of schizophrenia include:
Delusions. This is when people believe in things that aren’t real or true. For example, people with schizophrenia could think that they’re being harmed or harassed when they aren’t. They could think that they’re the target for certain gestures or comments when they aren’t. They may think they’re very famous or have great ability when that’s not the case. Or they could feel that a major disaster is about to occur when that’s not true. Most people with schizophrenia have delusions.
Hallucinations. These usually involve seeing or hearing things that other people don’t observe. For people with schizophrenia, these things seem real. Hallucinations can occur with any of the senses, but hearing voices is most common.
Disorganized speech and thinking. Disorganized speech causes disorganized thinking. It can be hard for people with schizophrenia to talk with other people. The answers people with schizophrenia give to questions may not be related to what’s being asked. Or questions may not be answered fully. Rarely, speech may include putting together unrelated words in a way that can’t be understood. Sometimes this is called word salad.
Extremely disorganized or unusual motor behavior. This may show in several ways, from childlike silliness to being agitated for no reason. Behavior isn’t focused on a goal, so it’s hard to do tasks. People with schizophrenia may not want to follow instructions. They may move in ways that are not typical or not appropriate to the social setting. Or they may not move much or respond at all.
Negative symptoms. People with schizophrenia may not be able to function in the way they could before their illness started. For example, they may not bathe, make eye contact or show emotions. They may speak in a monotone voice and not be able to feel pleasure. Also, they may lose interest in everyday activities, socially withdraw and have a hard time planning ahead.

This is the sort of mental health issue that doesn’t go away. It can only be treated to ease the symptoms but it’s not something can be “cured”. It’s a life-time health issue.
If you took the time to read the symptoms, which aren’t an exhaustive list, you’ll have noticed that there are not just the mental health issues but there a serious physical health issues sufferers face.
But why are we doing this real talk about schizophrenia?
Well because it is very close to us. I married a sufferer. I don’t regret it but it does make daily life hectic, and often unpredictable. It’s also something that is probably underestimated in its prevalence in our industry of adult entertainment.
More importantly we want to make sure that there is greater awareness of this very serious mental health issue. It’s important that we talk about these things to make it better known to the wider community and to help end the stigma around this very debilitating, life-long mental health issue.
If you think there is someone in your life suffering from schizophrenia help them get a diagnosis and then make sure you’re there for them.
And if you’re a loved one of a sufferer make sure you don’t suffer in silence trying to make it through each day unscathed. Find a support network for you and those around the sufferer to help you when things get tough to handle.
Because of the huge differences in support services around the world, you won’t find any recommendations here. Instead hit up Google or approach your nearest mental health unit or local hospital to help find relevant support networks.
